The Lynbrook Boys Basketball Program was in fine form Wednesday night, hosting the Freshman team from Menlo School (Atherton, CA) and the JV and Varsity Bruins of Santa Clara. Each of the Viking teams was able to get the win for the evening in front of such VIP as former Viking Coach - "Coach A" who was in the stands.
In the opening game, the Menlo Knights put up a great fight early, winning the first quarter 9-7 but dropping only 6 more in the 2nd quarter, as the Vikings stormed the 2nd quarter, putting up 17 points despite missing 8 of 10 free throws. In the third, the Vikes established themselves with strong defensive play. The Vikes second string lost an 11 point lead in the third quarter, and even the starters struggled to combat several Knight threes in the early fourth. At one point the Knights pulled within one point, but "Straw" Jaiswal hit a key three that rattled in and "Downtown" Brown scored 8 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, accounting for 2/3rds of the Viking points in the last eight minutes. Vikes held on to win, 46-40.
The JV Vikings, fresh off an overtime loss in the first league game to Fremont on Saturday had something to prove against the Santa Clara Bruins. The Vikes relied on man to man pressure throughout the game and were able to grab several key turnovers that resulted in transition baskets in the first quarter, where they outscored the Bruins 18-13. The Vikes failed to play cleanly however, and coughed up a discouraging amount of turnovers off failed dribbling. Thanks to a last second three pointer by "Big Tonka" Yu, the Vikes took a four point lead into half. Starting in the 3rd, the Vikes immediately gave up five points to fall behind, before stabilizing the ship and ultimately playing a competitive third quarter.
"Big Tonka" would score six key points in the 4th, aided by Tyler Li's only bucket which seemed to hang on the rim for the better part of three seconds. "Tonka" led the Vikes with 15 points, Kevin "Love my Crocs" Li would add 10, and "Talladega Nights" Kamatala scored 8 on the evening. The final was Lynbrook 53, Santa Clara 50.
Finally the Varsity game started out quite back and forth before the Vikings got into gear, and pulled away leading 19-8 after one quarter. Following a floater by "Jin n Tonic" with 3:16 left in the half, it was all Vikings - 31-10. At the half, the Vikes controlled the game 33-19. The game was essentially sealed with the Vikes breaking a Bruin press with 2:40 to go in the 3rd for an easy layup by "Old Man Jheri Curl" putting the lead back to 21 points, and then immediately doing it again, this time the layup put away by "Skinny Owen" Tsao. With that, Coach Appler was able to play his extended bench and comfortably cruise through the 4th quarter, ultimately coming out with the victory 62-49.
JV and Varsity return Friday to play at Saratoga, while the Frosh play Saturday at Mountain View.
