The 17th Annual Lynbrook Winter Classic Boys Basketball Tournament took place this past week and the host Vikings stood atop the field when the games were done.
The Vikings' first round matchup was Prospect on Thursday night. "Charlie Buckets" Loper was a leading figure in the game for Lynbrook, hitting five three pointers in what became an absolute route. The Vikes dismantled the Panthers 65-41. Prospect would go on in the 2nd Round to lose to Los Altos, and ultimately defeating Silver Creek in the Friendship game on Saturday.
Lynbrook faced American High School (Fremont), who defeated Los Altos, in the 2nd round and defeated them about as soundly, winning 60-40. In what was becoming a normalized pattern, the Vikes continued to not have any games with final scores closer than 15 points. In other action, Homestead defeated Gunn in the winners bracket 65-56 to advance to the finals.
Lynbrook and Homestead, who will meet twice more this season, met in the finals and it was Lynbrook that held the advantage throughout the game, although the lead was a mild one. At the end of the third quarter, Homestead swished through a half-court shot to give them an energy boost going into the 4th quarter. Lynbrook was able to build up a lead, and held an 11 point advantage, 48-37, with 1:27 left in the game. But Homestead was able to score 11 points in those 87 seconds. Lynbrook was able to salvage 4 points off of free throws by "Chainz" Marks in the final 27 seconds to stave off a Homestead comeback. Final score 52-48 Vikings.
With the victory, the Vikings secured the LWC title for the 3rd time, having previously won the tourney in 2016 and 2021. Homestead has won the tournament twice.
In the annual 3-point contest, Lynbrook's Rohan "Han Solo" Gopalan advanced to the finals, and then a second final round after a tie with American's Isaiah Lozano who proved to be the hot-shooter of the night, taking home the 3-point shooting title.
