For the second straight year, all three Boys Basketball teams traveled to Carlmont High School to play the Scots, and for the second straight year, Lynbrook came back with three losses. For paying fans, the first two games of the evening were dynamic contests, and worth every cent of admission.
In the opener, the Frosh Boys of Lynbrook delivered a compelling comeback in the second half, stunning the Scots who desperately tried to fend off the Vikings after initially building a strong lead. In the low-scoring affair, the Scots were up 28-15 midway through the third quarter, looking to cruise to victory over the sluggish Vikings. Enter Noah "Downtown" Brown who seemingly single-handedly brought life to the Vikes, making a series of defensive steals, and scoring six unanswered points in a quick run that brough the game back down to single digits. In the fourth Downtown would continue to be the primary catalyst for the Vikings, ending the game with 14 of his 16 points scored in the second half. Lynbrook would end up taking the lead, just to lose it quickly back to the Scots. Down 37-35, the Vikes brough it down the court, looked for several options and got a shooting foul with just a few seconds on the clock. The first FT was made, the second missed and the Scots chucked the ball into their frontcourt, escaping with the victory.
In the second game, the JV boys came out swinging and built up a 10-5 lead after the first quarter, getting to the line three times. The Vikes extended the lead to 19-12 at the half. The Scots followed with a 12-6 third quarter victory. What came to be was an exciting back and forth 4th quarter with both teams diving for balls, making key steals, and overall stepping up defense. For an high energy quarter there was little offense to be found, but the Scots hit a dagger of a three late and after turning the ball over the Vikes fouled to stop the time. After Carlmont hit a free throw, they missed the 2nd, the Vikes called timeout and ran a play for a three, which hit rim right and that was the game. For the Vikes, the 34 points they gave up was the best defensive game all year (albeit with a 28 minute game) but as Coach Bale commented, "Elite defense allows you to score 31 points, strong defense doesn't." Coach mentioned overall he was happy with the effort and annoyed at being locked out of the locker room for the second straight year.
The Varsity matchup between the Vikes and Scots was an unbalanced affair from the very beginning. Both teams threw up many shots beyond the arc in the first quarter, the difference was that the Scots were making them, and the Vikes were throwing up so many bricks one wondered if the Commodores were in the building. The Scots jumped out to an 18-7 lead after one, and after the Vikes answered with a six point run, thanks to two treys, the Scots then proceeded to respond back with a barrage of three point shots. At the half it was 35-22 Carlmont, but it was all downhill after that. The lead ballooned in the third and continued to get worse, eventually reaching 35 points. A late jumper closed out the game, Carlmont winning 70-37. The Vikes look to rebound from the loss with their three-game home tournament - the Winter Classic being held at Lynbrook on Dec. 12-14th.
